The Beta Splendens, commonly referred to as the Siamese Fighting Fish are delicate and beautiful on one hand, highly aggressive on the other. Conflict is a tool nature uses to forge strong species. Conflict is so fundamental to human nature that it permeates virtually every lasting attempt to explain it. Astrology, Literature, Religion and Psychology all depict a self that Is a fragmentation of incompatible parts. Prominent theories of personality provide some clear examples. Horney recognized conflicting trends in our social lives. We must learn to appose others, submit to and cooperate with others, and keep to our selves as appropriate. Freud saw a basic conflict between our humanity and our origin as animals. “Pisces” is about the harmony that follows when we integrate the conflicting forces within us.

This painting began with a simple fairy-tale theme. Stories like Repunzel, Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella, feature a youthful maiden waiting for some sort of resolution. While working, I realized it’s part of a larger narrative. The youthful figure in that still, quiet moment, before engaging in the events that will determine their destiny, is a perfect example of The Child Archetype. Carl Jung saw children as ‘pure potential’. The Child Archetype is a symbol of the personality emerging from that ‘pure potential’. He called this process Individuation. Aesthetically, I illustrated the movement from ambiguous potential, to clear individuality with a shift from loose, blurry brushwork in the background, to tighter more detailed work in the foreground. Just as a universe arises from a dense soup of matter and antimatter, so our personalities emerge from the pure potential of youth.

“All earthly things shall pass”. The phrase was mournfully uttered at coronation ceremonies during the Middle Ages. From Big Bang to Big Crunch, all reality is cycle within cycle without end. We are leaves falling from a tree. But it is because of us that the tree lives on. Even seemingly unmovable mountain ranges are in transit, climbing to the Heavens and crumbling to the earth. In “Sic Transit Gloria Mundi” I’ve attempted to convey the beauty and sorrow that we experience when we behold the cycle of life.
